The Suffolk Mystery Authors Festival is coming to the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts on August 12, 2017, and Köehler Books will be there! Established in 2014 when Suffolk’s Tourism division invited Ellery Adams for a book signing and got more than they bargained for, the festival surpasses itself each year. It grew from 11 authors and 250 attendees in 2014, to 24 authors, then to 29 in 2016. For its fourth year, the festival is expected to at least double those first-year numbers. The Suffolk Mystery Authors Festival has also expanded on the number of genres it includes, recently adding horror and paranormal to its repertoire of “cozy mystery,” suspense, romance, and women’s fiction. Although space for authors is typically limited, both traditionally-and self-published authors are welcome.
The festival will hold book signings, a new author expo, moderated panel discussions, and multiple workshops. Köehler Books’ own John Köehler and Joe Coccaro are sponsoring a VIP meet and greet with featured authors and will also lead a workshop on the ins-and-outs of getting a book published:
A Guide to Publishing
Pitching a manuscript to a reputable publisher is akin to submitting a resume to a desirable employer. Expect lots of competition. To advance, you need to make a great first impression. How?
Köehler Books Executive Editor Joe Coccaro will share tips on making editors and publishers rejoice when seeing your submission, rather than gag. Joe reviews submissions almost daily and has shepherded nearly 300 manuscripts from pitch letter to book.
John Köehler, publisher of his namesake company, also reviews submissions, and he helps authors with promising manuscripts to set expectations and manage the operational aspects of publishing, distributing and marketing the book. John and Joe’s candor about the book publishing business is captured in their book, A Pocket Guide to Publishing.
As they do in their nifty little guide, the Köehler Books duo will talk candidly about getting published. Each will speak briefly about what they do and how, and then open the floor to questions. This is more of a Q&A than lecture, so bring your curiosity and courage to speak up. Workshop participants will receive a free copy of the Pocket Guide.
